Many of us growing up were warned not to believe everything you hear. That eventually became "don't believe everything you see on social media." But now, researchers say the people who gave that advice might be more susceptible to believing misinformation they see online.
On this episode of #WakeUpCLT To Go, we're discussing a new study that found seniors believe nearly half of what they read online is true. Researchers found that senior citizens believe roughly 43% of the things they read on social media.
With 75% of seniors using the internet to access Facebook and other social media platforms, researchers say this makes these users vulnerable to scams and other online predators. Fake news really became a hot topic all the way back before the 2016 presidential election and researchers say it's important for everyone who uses social media to regularly vet information to verify if it's real before sharing it to their feed. Proper social media management is necessary to prevent falling for misinformation, or even worse, disinformation that's published to trick users into believe something that isn't real.
