Although Olga's date of birth is not known exactly, AD. as early as 890 and AD. It is estimated that it could be as late as 925. Olga was probably of Varangian origin and, according to the First Chronicle, she was born in Pskov. Although there is not much information about Olga's life before her marriage to Igor I, according to ancient Russian history expert Alexey Karpov, Olga was only 15 years old when she married. Igor was the son and heir of Rurik, the founder of the Rurik Dynasty. After his father's death, he was under the supervision of Oleg, who conquered the communities in the region and established a sovereignty in the region with Kiev as its capital. These conquered regions were called the Kiev Principality.
The Drevlians were a community with mixed relations with the growing Kievan Dynasty. Although they had fought alongside the Kievan Dynasty against the Byzantine Empire in the past and paid taxes to Igor's ancestors, they stopped paying taxes after Oleg's death. Thereupon, Igor went on an expedition to the Drevlian capital Iskortosen in 945 to collect taxes from the Drevlians again. Facing Igor's army, the Drevlians retreated and agreed to pay. On his way back from the campaign, Igor decided that the amount of taxes was not enough and went back to Skortsen with a small contingent of his army to ask for more taxes. Igor was killed in the Drevlian lands. According to the Byzantine historian Leo the Deacon, Igor was tortured and killed by being tied to trees and split in half.
