Beth Faiman, PhD, MSN, APN-BC, AOCN®, BMTCN®, FAAN, FAPO, of the Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Institute, Ohio, joined Cancer Nursing Today at the 2024 American Society of Hematology (ASH) Annual Meeting and Exposition to discuss the significance of this year’s meeting and share key highlights.
“It’s the essential meeting for physicians internationally with respect to the blood disorders,” Dr. Faiman said. “Being a nurse, and then a nurse practitioner, and now having a PhD credential, being a member of ASH is really special to me because of the fact that this is now a forum where my voice can be heard in the setting of a physician-type of an organization.”
She highlighted the benefits of in-person attendance, explaining that “being there and firsthand hearing the presentation of these abstracts is very, very special.”
For example, “one of the important things I've seen at this meeting is the side effect management, symptom care, [and] quality of life is really coming through,” Dr. Faiman said.
Beyond getting to see the data presented in-person, there are also key opportunities for networking, connection, and learning, she said.
“I get to meet new and old colleagues, one of my good friends here, Samantha [Shenoy] from UCSF, who is a myeloma specialist as well, is joining me at this meeting, as well as Donna Catamero, another one of my friends,” Dr. Faiman said. “We've made these relationships as nurses and advanced practitioners over time.”
