Lesotho is over-reliant on rainfed agriculture for food production and has a large poor rural population engaged in subsistence farming.
Vulnerability in the country is characterized by fragile and substantially degraded soils, high levels of food insecurity and poverty, and lack of infrastructure which curtails the ability of the population to deal with increasing climate variability and climate change.
The FAO project constructed ground water dams equipped with solar to facilitate water harvesting. All households benefiting from the projects were helped to construct keyhole gardens around their homesteads with vegetables and fruit trees to improve nutrition.
The incomes of the farming households also increased thanks to income generating activities like bee keeping and chickens rearing introduced in all the project sites.
