Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, popularly known as NTR, was an iconic figure in the Telugu film industry and a prominent political leader in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. He was born on May 28, 1923, in Nimmakuru, Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh, and passed away on January 18, 1996, in Hyderabad, Telangana.
NTR began his career as an actor in the Telugu film industry in the late 1940s. He gained recognition for his powerful performances, captivating screen presence, and unique dialogue delivery. NTR's notable films include "Pathala Bhairavi," "Maya Bazaar," "Missamma," "Gundamma Katha," and "Nartanasala." He portrayed a wide range of roles, from mythological characters to social dramas and romantic heroes, earning him a massive fan following.
In 1982, NTR founded the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) with the aim of representing the interests of the people of Andhra Pradesh. He entered politics with a revolutionary approach, rallying against the established political forces and championing the cause of the common man. In the 1983 elections, TDP achieved a historic victory, and NTR became the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.
As the Chief Minister, NTR introduced several welfare programs for the marginalized sections of society, including the "Pavala Vaddi" scheme for providing loans to women's self-help groups, the "Bangaru Talli" scheme for the welfare of the girl child, and the "Rajiv Arogyasri" scheme for providing healthcare to the poor. His governance style and commitment to social justice earned him immense popularity and respect among the masses.
However, NTR's political career faced ups and downs, including an unfortunate brief ouster from power in 1984. Nevertheless, he regained the Chief Minister's position in 1985 and continued to work for the welfare of the people until his death.
NTR's contribution to both the film industry and politics left an indelible mark on Andhra Pradesh's history. He was honored with numerous awards and accolades throughout his career, including the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India's highest honor in cinema.
Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao's legacy continues to inspire and influence generations of actors and politicians in Andhra Pradesh and beyond. His son, Nandamuri Balakrishna, and grandson, Nandamuri Kalyan Ram, have also followed in his footsteps, becoming prominent figures in the film industry.
