Botswana’s Ruling Party Loses Election, Ending 58-year Rule | Firstpost Africa
The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), which was in power for almost six decades, has lost the general elections. This marks a big political shake-up in the diamond-rich Southern African country. The final results are yet to be announced, but early results show the BDP has lost by a landslide. Three opposition parties had together won at least 31 of 61 seats in the national legislature, crossing the majority mark. The BDP is trailing in fourth position as per the partial results. This marks the end of BDP's long hold on power which has dominated Botswana's national politics since 1966 after the country gained independence from Britain.
