More than 300 million tons of plastics are produced every year but only 10% is recycled. 8 million tons end up in our oceans with a large majority of it originating in Asia. Dow is finding new ways to prevent plastics from polluting our waterways by working with organizations in India and Indonesia to turn hard-to-recycle plastics into longer lasting, more durable roads.
To build plastic roads, waste is collected and finely grinded then put into an asphalt mixture and ready for use. The projects in Indonesia and India resulted in more than 40 kilometers of plastic roads built. More than 100 metric tons of plastic waste, equivalent to more than 25 million flexible pouches were diverted.
Plastic roads are longer lasting, more durable and generate less greenhouse gas emissions in the production process. Dow is also partnering in Thailand to develop more plastics roads and reduce plastic waste. These projects help advance a circular economy and drive Dow’s 2025 Sustainability Goals but we can’t do it alone.
This video is a call to action for anyone who thinks plastic roads or parking lots would be a good fit for your community to please connect with us on Twitter @DowPackaging. We can provide details on how to make this happen in your community. Together, let’s pave our way to a more sustainable future.
