A team of high school girls in Herat, Afghanistan have built a prototype ventilator that they hope could be used to help treat patients during the novel coronavirus pandemic.
It took the six young women three months to construct the machine, which is based on a design created by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which would cost about $700 to produce compared to the $20,000 price tag of a traditional ventilator.
Afghanistan has approximately 800 ventilators, all of which have been imported from abroad according to the country’s ministry of health.
Afghanistan has had around 35,475 confirmed cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, and 1,181 deaths related to the virus according to official stastics.
