The Massachusetts Department of Children and Families (MA DCF), will begin the DCF investigation process when they believe a child is being abused or neglected. This means DCF has reason to suspect that a caregiver has intentionally harmed a child physically, emotionally, or sexually. The 51B Investigation happens after a 51A report is filed. DCF will investigate cases where the report describes a child who is not receiving adequate care. DCF will compile their findings into what is called a “51B report”. In other cases, DCF will do an emergency taking of the children in severe cases of abuse and neglect and the parents will be given an opportunity to state their case as what is called a 72 hour hearing.
Although most parents love their children, there are many that do not have the support they need to parent effectively. Some parents may be alone and without anyone to turn to when they are exhausted or don’t know how to handle situations they are confronted with. Sometimes parents work hard to feed and house their children and experience stresses that make taking care of their children a challenge – and every parent sometimes needs the help of other caring adults.
As a supplement to this episode, Ellen discusses the fundamentals of how to survive a Massachusetts DCF investigation and goes over the major pitfalls that every caregiver that has DCF involvement should know about when being investigated.
