"Evil Friends (feat. Danny Brown)(Jake One remix)" by Portugal. The Man
Curated by: Brendan Boland
Spotify: [ Ссылка ]
Genre: #rap, #remix
While Jake One might not be a household name, he has provided beats for the likes of MF Doom and 50 Cent, and released records on Rhymesayers and Stones Throw. In this remix, he not only showcases his ability to flip samples across classic breaks, he features the unique abilities of both musicians he is working with.
“Evil Friends” flips the standard beat construction. Opening with the eerie instrumental from Portugal. The Man, Jake uses Browns proverbial/compelling/defined flow as the melody - through his voice and rhyme scheme, Brown defines the song. Only after the first verse does the boom bap beat and sample come through. It’s as if in this magic trick, you start with the prestige and then, once soothed by its brilliance, do you hear the first act.
One imagines Portugal. The Man’s bluesy chorus sings of a love lost or an unbalanced relationship now broken. He whines and croons not of the sharp pain of the present but of the dull ache of a lingered past. The slight distortion makes him sound of a young Elton John, whose own “Indian Summer” has a somewhat similar sound.
This song deviates from the original story. Portugal’s version opens as a 60s psych rock ballad with Syd Barrett vocals, yet transforms into a Jack White inspired rockin' romp of defiance, rebellion, and self-efficacy. We forget the significance of this slight and focus on our life free from the burden of your friendship.
In the remix, Jake One continues the tradition of a laid back diss track. A dull, slow burn, this collaboration is perfect for the cookout or that hateful mix you make secret on Spotify and play on your way home from a hard day at work.
