NATION BRACES TO VOTE
Turkey is preparing for its 2015 general election on June 7th. The frontrunners of this year’s elections are the ruling Justice and Development Party and the opposition parties Republican People’s Party, Nationalist Movement Party and People’s Democratic Party . Voters turnout in the country is significant. According to Turkey’s Supreme Electoral Board, national participation in the 2002 general elections was 79.14 percent, in 2007 it increased to 84.25 percent, dropping just slightly in 2011 with 83.16 percent voter turnout.
SADDAM’S AID DIES
Former Iraqi deputy Prime Minister and Saddam Hussein's right-hand, Tariq Aziz has died at the age of 79 from a heart attack in an Iraqi prison . In jail since the 2003 US invasion of Iraq, Aziz was a key member of the Baath Party’s inner circle. He was Iraq's foreign minister between 1983 and 1991 and deputy prime minister between 1979 and 2003. In 2010, the Iraqi High Tribunal sentenced him to death for human rights abuses committed during the Baath rule.
GREECE WARNS CREDITORS
Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras has warned the IMF, the European Union and the European Central Bank not to impose “humiliating terms” on his country as it seeks bailout funds. He accused the international lenders of massively backtracking on measures agreed in recent months, and of failing to see the need for an end to austerity in their latest offer. Lenders have asked Greece to bundle its four repayments into one lump sum of 1 point 8 billion dollar by June 30.
DEATH TOLL RISES
The death toll in China’s cruise ship disaster has reached 331 as the rescue operation enters its 5th day. With still another 100 missing, this is officially China's deadliest boat disaster in nearly seven decades. On June 2, the ship sunk in the Hubei section of the Yangtze River due to a cyclone. Only 14 survived out of the 458 passengers.
