The concept of the male gaze, an important idea in feminist film theory, was introduced by scholar and filmmaker Laura Malvi in the now-famous 1975 essay "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema." Malvi adopted the term psychoanalysis, arguing that traditional Hollywood films respond to a deep-seated urge known as "Scopophilia." It's the sexual pleasure that accompanies seeing. Malvi claimed that the most popular films were shot in a way that would satisfy the male Scopophilia.
