The surfaces of the hammer and anvil are kept finely polished, and frequently "shined" with a fine rubberized sanding block (such as this [ Ссылка ] ) As well as preventing imperfections in the hammer / anvil being imprinted into the blade, the polished surface leaves a clear mark on the blade making it easier to see where your hammer strikes are falling.
