The flags atop the White House were lowered on Thursday as the U.S. marked one million lives lost to COVID-19.
U.S. President Joe Biden called the sombre occasion a “tragic milestone” as he convened a global summit on COVID-19.
The president told leaders attending the summit virtually that it is their duty to do “everything we can to prevent as many deaths as possible.”
In remarks to journalists, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said the U.S. has been a leader in fighting COVID-19 and has rallied more than $3 billion on global vaccination efforts and called on Congress to commit to additional COVID-19 funding.
