2019 Audi Q3 gains wheelbase length, digital cockpit and new driver-assist systems
Here's the all-new Audi Q3, now with sharper looks and plenty of tech
Audi took the wraps off the all-new Q3 small SUV this week, unveiling the second generation slated to go on sale later this year. The Q3 replaces a model that has been on sale in the U.S. since the 2015 model year but is much older, which means that the new Q3 will benefit from almost a decade's worth of technology, design and engineering evolution in a segment that has become much more important to Audi and other luxury automakers over the last few years.
When it comes to design, the 2019 Q3 is still easily recognizable as a smaller sibling of the Q5 and Q7, featuring a new pentagonal grille with chrome borders and bookended by two prominent vertical chrome inlets. A sculpted shoulder line leads from the front fender all the way to the rear fascia, which keeps the hatchback profile of the first-gen model amid newly sculpted taillights, a rakish D-pillar and more prominent exhaust tips.
Overall, the new Q3 keeps the profile of the first-gen model, even though it has grown in just about every dimension. The wheelbase has been stretched by 3 inches, while overall length has grown by 3.8 inches.
Inside, the familiar instrument cluster is gone, replaced by a version of the Audi Virtual Cockpit that is 10.25 inches in size. The digital cluster display is separate from the infotainment screen, which sits a little lower on the dash, below the AC vents, but there are still plenty of buttons and knobs for the temperature controls just above the gear shifter. The interior itself has been completely redesigned and now features plenty of sharp, horizontal lines and hexagonal shapes.
"The Audi connect portfolio ideally supplements navigation guidance with traffic information online, the point-of-interest search and information on parking spaces and filling stations appearing directly in the navigation map," Audi says. "The Audi Q3 utilizes the Audi fleet’s swarm intelligence to forecast the availability of roadside parking space, to provide information on hazardous spots and current speed limits."
Driver-assist tech will feature prominently in the new Q3, which will offer an adaptive cruise assist system combining the functions of adaptive speed assist, traffic jam assist and active lane assist. The Q3 will also feature a park assist system, able to steer the vehicle automatically out of parking spaces, with the driver only providing acceleration and shifting gears.
When it comes to engines, the U.S. lineup has yet to be finalized, but in total Audi will offer three gasoline engines and one diesel engine in the Q3 worldwide. We wouldn't hold our breath for the diesel version, but the most powerful of the four-cylinder gas units pumping out 230 hp is virtually guaranteed to make an appearance in the U.S. Audi plans to offer a choice of a six-speed manual (which we're not likely to get here) or a seven-speed S tronic automatic with this range of engines. Quattro all-wheel drive will be an option, but base versions of the Q3 will be very much front-wheel drive.
U.S.-market details for the 2019 Q3 will be made known closer to its commercial launch this fall.
