Ring modulators are advertised as wild and out of control-- which they are. Or rather, which they CAN be. However, if you "tune" a ring modulator to the key you are playing in, The effect becomes very musical and useable, though definitely still distinctive and unmistakable.
Tuning a ring modulator is a simple process:
1.) If your unit has a blend knob, make sure the modulator is mixed heavily with your clean tone.
2.) Minimize any additional modulation, if it is offered.
3.) Play the tonic of your chosen key (for example, a G if you are playing in the key of G).
4. Adjust the frequency of the modulator until the clean note and the modulated note match.
Aside from dedicated ring modulation units, you can do this to a greater or lesser extent with some very high speed modulations and sample rate reduction.
