STORYLINE
The leaders of the world's largest economies began arriving in Pittsburgh, in the US state of Pennsylvania, on Thursday, ahead of the beginning of the Group of 20 summit.
World leaders arrived throughout the day and headed into the city under heavy security.
The latest to arrive were Chinese President Hu Jintao, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, and Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende.
Earlier in the afternoon, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva arrived, followed by Argentinian President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner.
The two days of meetings in Pittsburgh are intended to work out a common approach to advance a fledgling economic recovery and prevent a recurrence of the recent global financial crisis.
The gathering, which follows G-20 meetings last November in Washington and this past April in London, includes older industrial powers, along with major fast-growing developing economies such as China, India and Brazil.
Issues on the agenda include capping bankers' bonuses, overhauling financial regulation and plotting a future course for sustainable growth.
The two-day "checkup" summit is aimed at making sure a fledgling global recovery remains on track while laying down tougher rules for global financial institutions.
The heads of the Group of 20 nations were meeting to review strategy for the third time since the worst global recession since the Great Depression struck with force a year ago.
The situation is not as dire as at the previous meetings last November in Washington and last April in London. But the global recovery remains fragile, with many big financial institutions still under strain.
Brown said he hoped the G-20 would agree on a new compact on jobs and growth, an idea that is being pushed by President Barack Obama.
US officials expect no binding, treaty-like language.
