Differences between Turtle and Tortoises are as follows,
00:00 Intro
Both turtles and tortoises are reptiles and part of the same order of animals known as Testudines. In fact, all tortoises are technically considered turtles but not all turtles are tortoises. Most people use the term “turtle” to reference any reptile with a shell on their back, but there are several differences between these two unique reptiles.
00:30 Habitat
Turtle - Turtles are water dwelling reptiles, however some turtles even live most of their lives on dry land.
Tortoise - Tortoises are land dwelling reptiles.
00:52 Shell
Turtle - Turtles have thinner, more water-dynamic shells streamlined to aid in swimming.
Tortoise - Tortoises have more rounded and domed shells.
01:17 Scute Shedding
Turtle - Turtles shed their scutes to remove old growth and make room for new scutes to grow through underneath. They bask in the sun to dry their scutes and help them flake off.
Tortoise - Tortoises don’t shed anything from their shells. Their keratin is constantly growing. Compounded growth hardens their shells and keep them protected from predators.
01:49 Eggs
Turtle - Turtles lay between 50 to 240 eggs per clutch depending on species.
Tortoise - Tortoises lay between 2 to 30 eggs per clutch.
02:12 Limbs
Turtle - Turtles have more flipper like legs, or webbed feet which makes it easier for them to cruise through the water. Few turtles also have clawed feet.
Tortoise - Tortoises have club-like forelegs and 'elephantine' hind legs which help them move around and carry the extra body weight. They have stumpy padded feet with scaly toes.
02:43 Swimming Ability
Turtle – Turtles are built for aquatic life and are excellent swimmers.
Tortoise – Tortoise are not designed for swimming, primarily because of their heavy, domed shells; and they prefer to stay away from water (except when drinking and bathing).
03:13 Diet
Turtle - Turtles are omnivorous.
Tortoise - Tortoises are generally vegetarians.
03:38 Lifespan
Turtle - Turtles typically live between 30 and 50 years, however, few cases of sea turtles are expected to live as long as 150 years.
Tortoise - Most tortoise species can live between 80 and 150 years. There are few cases reported to also have lived as long as 255 years.
