The Australian’s Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan says China is “absolutely determined to get military bases in our region” amid the Solomon Islands inking a security deal with the Chinese Communist Party.
“The Chinese are now likely to have a military base within 2,000 kilometres of the Australian shore,” he told Sky News host Peta Credlin.
He said Australia needs to do “everything we can within our region to deny them that".
“We could have missiles stationed all around the Australian coast, with a range of 2,000 kilometres which would dominate our maritime approaches,” he said.
“But instead, we’re sleepwalking to disaster in our military budget.”
