Charles Watson Mitchell was born on November 24, 1861, in Birmingham, West Midlands, United Kingdom.

Mitchell stood five feet nine inches. He had an aggregate weight of 150 pounds for his career.

Mitchell's career spanned from 1877 to 1896. He had twenty-six wins, three losses, and ten draws. Nine of his victories were by knockout. He also had ten no-decision bouts. He had a winning percentage of fifty-three and a knockout percentage of eighteen. Mitchell is most associated with the Heavyweight division though he often weighed the welterweight and middleweight limit.

Charlie Mitchell was a clever and elusive boxer who used said ability to defeat many much heavier men. He had well over 100 fights when factoring in his work under the London prize ring rules. Mitchell's skills were highly regarded worldwide, and he became a mainstay in history for his strategic feats in the ring.
