Amazing Aerial Video Stories present The Last Lynx Released in Plitvice, Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia. Footage by Paul Prescott and Josip Tomaić.
On March 23, 2023, a lynx was released in Plitvice by the project LIFE Lynx. LIFE Lynx is working to save the lynx population in Croatia and Slovenia. This is not the first reintroduction of lynx in the area, the first release actually happened in 1973. However, the population has declined since then as the remaining local lynx were all descended from the same few animals and became inbred.
Over the course of the project, LIFE Lynx released 16 lynx to bring genetic diversity to the population. They chose the locations carefully to ensure that the new lynx were dispersed throughout the region. Plitvice Lakes National Park was an important release site in Croatia also because there were no new cubs for several years in the area. Having a healthy lynx population is important for healthy habitats as a whole. Lynx control the population of prey animals such as roe deer, curbing deforestation and disease.
Paul Prescott, the CEO of Amazing Aerial, was able to record the release with his drone without disturbing the lynx, probably the first case of a lynx release captured from the air. He says it was an honor to witness the animal’s first steps in its new home.
