Adagietto from Symphony No 5 - Gustav Mahler (1901), transcribed and played by David Briggs, on the Rieger organ of the Stephansdom, Vienna (7th May 2022).
What a completely exhilarating experience, to perform Mr Mahler’s amazing music, in the city which was his home from 1897-1907, before he came to NYC. Here is the famous Adagietto, from the Fifth Symphony, almost certainly composed as a wedding present for Alma in 1901, in a transcription I made in Gloucester back in 1997. It sounds totally ravishing on the new Stephansdom organ, as reconstructed by Rieger Orgelbau, just a couple of years ago - truly now one of the great organs of Europe. I’m afraid I forgot my ZoomH5 for the sound, but the iPhone 13 gives a good impression of this instrument’s colossal symphonic palette.
Grateful thanks to my friend Konstantin Reymaier (Domorganist) for his permission to post this footage.
