Amid the attacks on Hindus and temples, the interim government of Bangladesh has started importing rice from India. Bangladesh has signed an agreement with India to buy two lakh tonnes of rice. An official of Bangladesh's Food Department said on Friday that the first consignment of 27,000 tonnes has reached Chittagong Port.

The official said that currently there is no shortage of rice in his country. However, due to the recent severe floods, the government has decided to import rice to avoid a crisis in the future. Apart from two lakh tonnes of parboiled rice, the interim government will import another one lakh tonnes of rice from India through tender. Apart from this,The official also said that apart from tenders, there are plans at the government level to import more rice from India. Bangladesh has removed all duties on rice imports to keep prices stable. Bangladesh imports a large quantity of rice from India at a private level with zero import duty.

The official said that private importers have so far obtained permission from the Bangladesh government to import 16 lakh tonnes of rice from India. According to the official,Bangladesh has also signed an agreement with the Myanmar government for importing one lakh tonnes of rice. It is also negotiating with Vietnam and Pakistan for rice import.
