At Mobile Reviews Eh!, we base everything we do on actual usage. Honestly, what other way is there?
I've been reviewing waterproof iPhone cases for several years now. There has only been a couple of instances where cases actually fail and both instances were my fault.
With the iPhone 7, I'm approaching the waterproof iPhone case reviews from a durability standpoint rather than a pure waterproof standpoint. Why? Because a broken case isn't waterproof.
For this durability test, I dropped the four different waterproof cases all around 5 ft on to a sidewalk. I tried to drop the cases from the same level, at the same angle with the intent of trying to split the case apart.
Here's what I discovered after 12+ drops:
1. The Dog and Bone Wetsuit came apart after one drop. This was a little surprising but I've been sent a replacement Wetsuit so maybe the new one is better.
The old Dog and Bone Wetsuits were tanks. They had an inner sleeve that the iPhone sat in so even if the front/back covers were to pop off, the iPhone would still be protected. The sleeve also allowed a bit of give for screen protectors.
The newer Wetsuits remind us a lot of the LifeProof Nuud with it's screen protector-less water protection.
2. The Dog and Bone Wetsuit Impact was a pleasant surprise. I was expecting a similar result to the regular Wetsuit but after 1/2 dozen drops the case stayed together. The Wetsuit Impact didn't show a lot of wear/tear as well.
The Wetsuit Impact has a built in screen protector but unlike the LifeProof Fre, the screen protector is made from a thin piece of glass. I had an issue with the iPhone 6 version of the Impact since I was able to crack the screen quite easily. The iPhone 7 version is still intact even after multiple installs.
3. The LifeProof Fre split slightly after one drop which isn't great. The second drop resulted in the case actually coming apart. This does not bode well for the LifeProof Fre but LifeProof has a great exchange policy which means I'll be able to get a replacement for the Fre.
4. My guess was that the Ghostek Atomic was going to be the most durable case in this group. If you watched the video, you'll know that I accidentally used the iPhone 6 version of the case for the first few drops (the camera didn't line up).
After getting the right Atomic, I was surprised to see the volume button come flying off from the rebound jump. The case is still waterproof but there is no way for you to adjust the volume after that knob comes off.
So that's what I've discovered regarding the durability of the LifeProof Fre, Dog & Bone Wetsuit, Dog & Bone Wetsuit Impact and the Ghostek Atomic 3. The Wetsuit Impact comes out the winner in this group, followed by a tie between the Fre and Atomic with the regular Wetsuit being last.
