The State Duma, the lower house of Russia's parliament, on Sunday (15/12) gave first-reading approval to the government's revised 1997 draft budget. Its ultimate approval remained far from certain.
The new draft, presented to the Duma by Russian Finance Minister Alexander Livshits, added an extra 34.8 trillion rubles (six billion dollars) in projected revenue and spending. Two previous drafts had been rejected.
