Becoming a hermit as a teenager, Simon spent 20 years living in solitude until he entered into religious life as a priest. Receiving a vision of the Virgin Mary, Simon was given the sign of the scapular to add to the Carmelite uniform and through this helped to save the Carmelites of the Middle East, who were experiencing persecution.
