Gaia is joined in the Snug by Philipp Rode from LSE to discuss the paradox of cities, how they have greatly improved wealth, health and eduction but also used an incredible amount of non-renewable resources, polluting the air, soil and water.
The big challenge is to understand how urban design is going to affect the development of cities in countries where the population is booming. Philipp claims that one of the most important challenges that need to be faced is mobility: pedestrian, public transport and private ownership of cars. Can cities in emerging markets skip the hydrocarbon era? How are they going to face the poverty alleviation and long-term planning dilemma?
