How I Spent 24 Hours in Shanghai – Food and Atmosphere
Join me as I explore Shanghai during a 24-hour layover, packed with incredible food, historic charm, and a touch of adventure! 🌏 Here’s a breakdown of the places I visited and the experiences I had:
🌙 Dinner at Shuangxi Old Shop
I started my adventure with a spontaneous stop at Shuangxi Old Shop, a local spot with a low rating but incredible food. The dim sums—filled with ginger and shrimp—were out of this world, scoring 11/10! Paired with stewed beef noodles (Niu Rou Mian), this meal set the tone for a flavorful journey. Dessert was a surprise coconut milk pudding from the kind owner, followed by Jiang Zhi Niu Nai (ginger milk with almonds)—a unique and warming treat.

🏢 French Concession and Xiangshan Apartment
Shanghai’s colonial charm shone as I walked through the historic French Concession. Staying overnight at the Xiangshan Apartment (built in 1933) was like stepping back in time, with its high ceilings, wooden details, and elegant design—a perfect blend of history and atmosphere.

🍞 Breakfast at Avec Toi Bakery
Located near the iconic Wukang Mansion, I found Avec Toi, a cozy French bakery offering authentic pastries. I tried an almond tart and far Breton. While delicious, they were a bit too rich for me—authentic doesn’t always mean better. 😉
📍Address: 73 Tianping Rd, Xuhui District, Shanghai, China, 200031
🏯 Old Shanghai and Yu Garden
Craving more of China’s essence, I explored the Yu Garden (Garden of Joy). This serene spot reminded me of Kyoto, blending tranquility with traditional Chinese decor. The willow trees and intricate details made it a must-visit, despite the crowds.
📍Address: 218 Anren St, Huangpu District, Shanghai, China
🍜 Lunch at Songhelou Sushi Soup Noodles
For lunch, I headed to Songhelou Sushi Soup Noodles, where the chili-infused oil (hóng yóu) brought back childhood memories. However, the dim sums and sweet and sour pork couldn’t compare to my first meal. Lesson learned: always eat where the locals eat!
📍Address: China, 5, Huangpu, Bailing Rd, 5号CN 上海市 邮政编码: 200010
🥗 Second Lunch at He Ji Qiao Yi Wan
Not satisfied, I tried He Ji Qiao Yi Wan, indulging in Tomato and Egg Stir-fry and a toasted bun with meat. This place didn’t disappoint—simple yet flavorful dishes with a local touch.
📍Address: China, Shang Hai Shi, Huangpu, 399, 正南方向90米 邮政编码: 200120
🌆 Evening Walk on The Bund
Before leaving for my next destination, I took a stroll along The Bund. The stunning colonial architecture and city lights were the perfect way to wrap up my whirlwind day in Shanghai.
