How To Rehab After Knee Meniscus Surgery
A professional soccer player continues her rehabbing from a right knee meniscectomy. She’s performing an essential exercise for a muscle group often forgotten about in rehab, SOLEUS! It is critical to train the soles because it is involved during walking and running, and after surgery, just like the gastrocnemius, atrophy occurs. Failure to train this muscle will prevent a full recovery, especially with elite athletes. For soccer (football) players, it is crucial to train the soleus because of its recruitment/activation during mid-stance with running and sprinting for 90 minutes. To minimize potential problems in later phases of rehab, train plantar flexion — remember to start with the end in mind — return to play!
When calf (heel) raises are combined with blood flow restriction (BFR) bands performing low-load, high-repetition exercises, the load on her tibiofemoral (knee) joint is decreased, resulting in less pain. Also, the BFR bands create an anabolic environment to facilitate tissue repair. This exercise predominantly trains the gastrocnemius; it is essential to include additional exercises for biasing the soleus. Exercise progressions will consist of single-leg versions for both muscles.
As always — train both legs!
Effective and efficient rehab is criterion-based, not time-based.
