How tobacco companies corrupted our food supply 🚬
Back in the 1980’s key players of the tobacco industry Phillip Morris and R.J. Reynolds, acquired three of the world’s most popular food companies at the time - Kraft, General Foods and Nabisco. These companies have hundreds of other brands and products under their name and so they quickly became the largest “food” producers in the west. They have since been renamed and merged with other companies and sit under a parent company like Mondelez International…which can be all very intentionally confusing.
Research published in the Journal of Addiction found during that time between 1988 and 2001 when big tobacco owned these food companies, their products were compared to similar products from competing brands and were found to be far more addictive. In other words they engineered these processed foods to be hyper palatable in the same ways they formulated their cigarettes to be as addictive as possible, using a variety of harmful artificial ingredients.
What’s even worse is they set the standard for the processed foods we eat today. By the early 2000’s the tobacco giants mostly exited the food industry, however the majority of other companies saw what worked and had many products reformed to make them just as addictive and hyper palatable as what the tobacco companies initially figured out. This was exposed when The University of California revealed internal documents of big tobacco explaining how they perfectly designed products to be addictive and also the strategies they used to market them to all ages.
