Here's a rocker from George Harrison's first solo album All Things Must Pass (1970). He wrote this in January 1969, after briefly leaving the Beatles during the fraught Twickenham sessions. Wah Wah refers to a headache or pain, but also the Wah Wah guitar pedal heard on the song
The backing track was the first song recorded for the 1970 sessions, on May 28th. George played the rhythm electric guitar, Eric Clapton played a Les Paul with wah-wah pedal, and three acoustic guitars were played by three members of the Apple group Badfinger. Afterwards, George overdubbed slide guitar using his 1961 Fender 'Rocky' Stratocaster
It's not 100% clear which guitar George used for the electric guitar that kicks off the song. I did lots of tests using my Les Paul, Casino and Strat into my Fender Champ (an amp used on All Things Must Pass) but couldn't quite nail it. After more tests, my Stratocaster into my 1965 Fender Bassman amp got the closest. I'm using my 2022 Fender Custom Shop '63 Sonic Blue Journeyman Strat, an Analogman King of Tone pedal for overdrive, into the normal channel of the Fender Bassman
Eric Clapton most likely used a Les Paul. Either the 1957 'Lucy' Les Paul Standard that he gave to George, or a Black Beauty Custom. He used a wah pedal, probably a Vox or Crybaby. I'm using my 2005 Gibson Les Paul Standard, Teese RMC Picture Wah into the 1965 Fender Bassman. I'm also using the Analogman King of Tone for Eric's part
The band Badfinger played acoustic guitar on a lot of the All Things Must Pass album, as well as at the 1971 Concert for Bangladesh. Pete Ham, Joey Molland and Tom Evans (the whole band, sans drummer) played simultaneously on Wah Wah. They used two six string acoustics, and a 12-string acoustic. It's possible one of them used George's Gibson J-200, but otherwise it's a bit of a mystery. I'm using my 1969 Martin 00-18, 1967 Gibson B-25 12 string, and an early 1970's Ibanez Jamboree 698. This is a high quality copy of a Gibson J-200, and my first time using this guitar!
George certainly used his Rocky Stratocaster for slide guitar. This was the Sonic Blue Fender he used in the Beatles, starting with the 1965 Help! album. In 1967 he painted it psychedelic colors. This became the guitar he used the most for slide until his death, starting with this very song in 1970. He used a Fender Champ amp for most of the slide parts on All Things Must Pass. I'm plugging my Strat directly into a 1962 Fender Tweed Champ. Amp volume is at 8.5, so it's crunching up nicely. As for most of George's slide songs, he is tuned to open E: EBEGsharpBE
The album was produced by Phil Spector at Abbey Road Studios, and he famously used a lot of reverb and echo on all the songs. I'm using my Abbey Road Plates plug-in to replicate this thick wall-of-sound mess
