Italy has registered 74,386 cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the virus, and 7,503 deaths.
The number of infections around the globe on Thursday reached a half-million and the death toll climbed to about 23,000.
The coronavirus pandemic has crippled economies and forced restrictions on the movement of millions of people in attempts to stop the virus from surging further and overwhelming health care systems.
For most people, the coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough.
For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.
