I have had my new Minn Kota trolling motor for 5 or 6 months now. I wanted to do a updated review now that I have used it for a while. Unfortunately I did not use it as much as I had planned. With most of the country shut down earlier this year. Our local lakes were packed! On one occasion we had to pick up the boat trailer to move it out of the way. Just to fit in the 1/2 of a parking spot left.
I had only one hiccup when I first started using this motor, but it was my own fault. I honestly felt rather foolish, but got a good laugh at myself. The motor would continually slide all the way down in the water after a hour or so of use. I had even thought about finding a set collar to put on the shaft. When I went to see what size I needed I noticed the one already on the motor shaft. All I had to do was slide it down.
As far a power. The motor pushed my VERY heavy 18’6” Carolina Skiff like a dream. A few days it was very windy on the water. I kicked it into 5th speed and scooted right along. I wouldn’t put it on a big 20’ center console, but it works great for my 18’ skiff.
Steering is very simple. Much simpler than the foot controlled one I had previously. Plus you can cut it on and go do something else on the boat. With my old foot controlled motor, it had a mind of its own. I would cut on continuous and it would go all over the place.
My favorite thing is reverse! When crappie fishing the banks you get hung up a lot. When you go into shallow water to get your lures it can be a pain. With my old motor I had to spin the head 180 degrees to back out. It never failed that it would spin it right into a rock or tree. Now I just flip it in reverse and back out.
I would definitely recommend this motor. It was 1/2 the cost of a foot controlled motor. And 1/4 the price of a saltwater rated one. Therefore if it doesn’t last as long as I hope. I will not be out a ton of money. Easy to use and operate and seems well built. Thank you to everyone for watching and please watch my first “How to Install and Review”!
