The Umno supreme council has decided to withdraw the party's support for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, less than 12 hours after its vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob was appointed as the deputy prime minister.
In announcing the party's decision, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Muhyiddin should resign, and make way for a temporary prime minister to take over.
This temporary prime minister he said, should only be focused on the people's welfare and should only be in power until "herd immunity" is achieved, after which fresh elections should be held.
