Explanations in cell biology rely heavily on the notion of molecule-molecule interactions, such as between proteins. However, barring functional and enzymatic assays of the consequences of such interactions, no consensus definition of what actually constitutes an 'interaction' exists in the field. This talk will discuss a theoretical account of what it may mean for two proteins to interact in the cell, and will subsequently use this account to make proposals for improving mechanistic explanations in cell biology.
