(15 Aug 2015) The Greek farm breeding industry will be hit hard following the approval of a new bailout deal, costing the sector about two (b) billion euros, according to Takis Peveretos, President of Greek breeders association, breeder and farmer.
On Friday, finance ministers of the 19-nation euro single currency group, approved the first 26 billion euros (29 billion US dollars) of a vast new bailout package to help rebuild Greece's shattered economy.
The approval came after Greece's parliament passed a slew of painful reforms and spending cuts after a marathon overnight session that divided the governing party, raising the specter of early elections.
According to Peveretos, the two previous memorandums reduced the income of the breeding and farming industry by 1.5 billion, and the third one will reduce it even further by two billion euros.
Breeding is a 24/7 job, says Peveretos, since the animals need to be fed and milked every day.
He said he needs 1,000 euros per day to feed his animals, but was only able to get 60 euros per day - and he was not getting paid on time because the people he was supplying did not have access to enough money.
Peveretos has been part of the industry for 38 years and his two sons are following his footsteps, one of them building a cheese production unit, so the family will be able to produce cheese using the milk they get from their animals.
