The European Union (EU) on Tuesday defended its record of helping migrants in Libya, after a U.N.-backed investigation commission disclosed that the EU assistance to the Libyan authorities, responsible for controlling migration and detention centers, “has aided and abetted the commission of crimes,” against migrants including crimes against humanity.
"I don't agree with the claims that our money is going to finance the business model of the smugglers or of those who are misusing and mistreating people in Libya, quite to the contrary," said European Commission Spokesperson Peter Stano at a news conference in Brussels, adding that it goes directly to take care of migrants.
