The myth that ERVs are an unsafe or unproven way to ventilate compared to HRVs is a bizarre twist- here's how to think through the question and come to the right conclusion in your own mind. Energy (or Enthalpy) Recovery Ventilator (ERV) cores equalize temperature and humidity, while Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) cores recover temperature alone.
Therefore, ERVs are better at shielding homes from humidity than HRVs in even extreme situations, as you'll see, but on the other hand they are NOT a replacement for dehumidifiers. Think of an ERV as a shield, or a buffer, or a battery, and put together the system of your next home's ventilation with greater clarity and elegance.
