Instead of just cranking up your shutter speed to freeze the action of a waterfall, learn how to do Long Exposure Waterfall Photography which uses a slow shutter speed to create motion blur. The effect is done by slowing your camera's shutter speed down so that the sensor is exposed to light for a longer period of time. This technique will blur the motion of anything moving while the shot is being taken, but will keep everything else sharp..in this case, the water that is falling will look silky smooth while the rock/trees/etc will remain sharp! Follow this step by step tutorial (with photo examples) to learn the basics of long exposure photography. All you need is a camera, a tripod, an ND filter and a remote shutter and you're good to go!
