#Rameswaram is a small town in the #Ramanathapuram district in the Indian state of #TamilNadu. It is situated on #PambanIsland, separated from the mainland of India by the Pamban Channel. #MannarIsland of #SriLanka is about 40 kilometers from here. Pamban Island is also known as Rameswaram. The #PambanBridge connects Rameswaram to the mainland of #India. It is considered one of the holiest places in India, and is also part of the Char Dham pilgrimage.
It is written in the holy #Ramayana that Lord Shri Ram Ji built a bridge over the sea from here to go to Lanka with the help of Lord Hanuman to save Mata Sita from Ravana. The sea separating India and Sri Lanka is called #Sethusamudram.

The mainland of India is connected through the Rameswaram Pamban Bridge. This bridge was opened for traffic in 1914. This bridge is a two-leaf bascule bridge that is erected to allow ships to pass under it.
Rameswaram railway station is the main railway station here which is connected by daily express trains from major cities like Chennai, Madurai, Trichy and Coimbatore. Ramanathapuram - Rameswaram National Highway connects Rameswaram to the mainland of India. It is well connected to all the important cities of Tamil Nadu by road. The nearest airport to Madurai is at a distance of 174 km from Rameswaram. City buses are available for day and night services. Taxis and auto rickshaws are also easily available here.
