#tomowensuap The Kaikoura Lights is the common designation for that series of UFO sightings that took place above the Kaikoura Mountain ranges of New Zealand's South Island in late December 1978.
It all started on 21 December 1978 when the crew of an AW.660 Argosy flying cargo for Safe Air Ltd first observed odd lights while in flight. These lights tracked along with their aircraft for several minutes so they could not have been reflections from the ground. To his credit, the former US Navy employed optical physicist and leading ufologist Bruce Maccabee (who I highly respect) has provided sound reasoning to dismiss the ridiculous explanation of the squid boats.
The Safe Air Ltd pilots Vern Powell and Ian Pirie spotted strange lights while flying from Blenheim to Christchurch. They described some of the lights to be as large as a house with others were small but flashing brilliantly. ATC reports show that the objects appeared on Wellington radar as well as on the aircraft's on-board radar.
On 30 December 1978, an Australian television crew flew aboard Safe Air's Argosy airplane "Merchant Enterprise" to acquire background footage for a show about the Kaikoura sightings. The pilots this time were Bill Startup and Bob Guard who were flying a newspaper run between Wellington and Christchurch.
During the flight to Christchurch, unidentified lights were observed by five people on the flight deck for many minutes at a time and they were filmed in color by the television crew. Again, these objects were tracked by Wellington ATC and one of the lights actually followed the aircraft almost until landing at Christchurch.
The airplane then took off again still with the television crew still on board, this time heading for Blenheim. Upon reaching just 2000 feet, the aircraft encountered a gigantic lighted orb which then fell into station off the wing tip and tracked along with the cargo aircraft for nearly 15 minutes all while being filmed, watched, tracked on the aircraft radar and described on a tape recording made by the TV film crew.
