Dr. Malvinder Parmar, a Professor of Medicine from Northern Ontario
School of Medicine in Sudbury and Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, reviews his article appearing in the November 2021, issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where he highlights the importance of both ACE2 and TMPRSS2 in the pathogenicity of SARSCoV-2. He describes the ACE2 role like a loyalty card of a hotel chain that attracts to the hotel but still a key is required to enter the room. The key role of priming the spike protein is played by TMPRSS2, and co-expression of both is important. Several ongoing studies are evaluating the effect of blocking TMPRSS2 in preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection and hope that this strategy would prove to be a part of multi-pronged strategy to control the COVID-19 pandemic.
