Outstanding marine to terrestrial biodiversity gradient at Wenuana Reef, part of the Nua Marine Reserve Network along the Galeya coast of Ferguson Island, in Papua New Guinea.
The outer reef slope drops into 250m of water and is bathed by clear Solomon Sea water moving through the Sanaroa Channel, while the inner lagoon is sheltered and has a totally different coral community. Finally the coral transitions to seagrass and then into the luxuriant tropical rainforest growing on the slopes of the dormant Mt Lamonai volcano.
We wish to acknowledge the outstanding support for marine conservation shown by local landowner and reef custodian, Mr Nuaboda, who has been a steadfast advocate for inclusion of the Wenuana reef in the Nua Marine Reserve Network since Day 1.
The local Sea Women of Melanesia team led by landowner Lorie Pipiga, with assistance from the Coral Sea Foundation and our partners, have been supporting the Nua partner villages with reef monitoring surveys and humanitarian aid deliveries for over 16 years.
The fact that these reefs remain an outstanding example of eastern coral triangle marine biodiversity is testament to the hard work and cooperation of the local landowners of this Galeya coast, and we commend them for their efforts.
