Douglas Learns that we need to be rooted in Christ to bear good fruit.
Douglas Loves the fall, it's his favorite season. The trees are turning beautiful colors, you can jump in piles of leaves, it's the time to go apple picking, and all kinds of other nice things. Today Douglas will be talking about trees, because Jesus used trees, specifically fruit trees, as a metaphor for what it actually means to be a "good person." You can tell a fruit tree is good or bad by it's fruit. If a tree makes delicious fruit, that's a good tree! But it's a bad tree if it makes bad fruit. The Bible tells us to "bear good fruit" or to make good fruit. But it's not talking about growing a peach off your cheek or anything like that. your actions and behaviors are the "fruit" of your life. The Bible says that we should have the Fruit of the Spirit in our lives. The Fruit of the Spirit are: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-Control. Whether or not a tree bears good fruit has everything to do with where it's planted, where it gets it's nutrients. Douglas' family recently moved, and their new place has a HUGE backyard. In one corner of the backyard the previous owners of the house had left all kinds of garbage and dumped nasty chemicals, but there was a mulberry tree growing in that corner of the yard. Normally mulberry trees make really yummy berries that you can pick off of them and eat right off the tree, but not this tree. Douglas' dad told him and his brother that they were NOT to eat anything form that tree. His tone was serious enough that Douglas and his brother Stephen didn't try to eat anything from that mulberry tree. But one day they say a bird fly by and land on the tree and eat some of the berries. As the bird flew away it fell out of the sky, dead. Those berries were so poisonous that the bird died almost immediately! That mulberry tree had been pulling all the nastiness out of the ground from where it was planted in put it into it's berries, so that even though the berries looked good, they were really very bad. If we live our lives only according to whatever we happen to feel like doing, we call that living according to "the flesh," but if we live our lives the way God wants us to live, we call that living according to the Spirit. If we want to have the Fruit of the Spirit, then we need to be rooted in Jesus Christ. If you've never made the choice to root yourself in Jesus, to give your life to Him and live according to the Spirit, please do! It's the most important choice you can ever make. So if you would like to make that choice please talk to your pastor, parents, or anyone that you know who has already given their life to Jesus, they would LOVE to walk you through it.
