2000+ years old and incredibly well preserved.
"Jiaohe City (or Yar City) was an ancient city that was strategically located along the ancient Silk Road. What was unique about this City is that it was built on a plateau or terrace which gave this City a natural barrier from any attacking enemies. To get into the City, one must walk up a long pathway uphill, and then there was once large gates that had protected entry from enemies.
Upon entering the City, you can see that this this was once a sizeable city because of all the structural remains in the area. As can be seen from the photos, many of the structures are deteriorating from the weather elements. The structural remains are made from an earthen material (adobe), which is susceptible to the weather. It appears to me that eventually this City will be "no more" because I could see no protection from the elements and no major "restoration" projects going on here.
This City is definitely a worthwhile place to visit because of its historic history and location along the China Silk Road. The Visitor Center located at the entrance to the City is also a nice place to visit because it has interesting photos and displays about the history of this City."
