The final version of “Nightline” (also titled “Nite Line”, “Night Line” and “Niteline”) was leaked by American producer Eulonzo on December 10th, 2024. It was unknown this version existed. The demo version was rumored to have been planned to be the B-side for the hit “Beat It” on the 12” single, but was cancelled and replaced with “Burn This Disco Out” from the “Off the Wall” album. It is noted to have been planned to be one of the singles for the ‘Captain EO’ soundtrack in 1986.
Although fans are familiar with the demo version that leaked on July 7th 2002, it has been revealed that “Nightline” was originally written by Glen Ballard, Brie Howard and Davey Faragher. The Pointer Sisters, Ellen Foley and Randy Crawford were brought in by Joe Kehr to record background vocals. It was recorded and reworked in August of 1982 during the Thriller sessions, and finished in November of 1985 during the Captain EO sessions.
It was produced by Joseph Kehr and Quincy Jones, with Joe handling most of the production for this track, specifically the Linn LM-1 programming. As noted, the demo version was recorded and reworked in August of 1982 during the Thriller sessions. However, it did not make the cut for the “Thriller” album. It is believed to be due to songs such as “Beat It” and “Billie Jean” fitting the later sound that Michael and the team were going for with the album. Michael also cancelled it for release as a B-side single for “Beat It”.
The song was reworked one final time in from February to November of 1985 during the Captain EO sessions. Michael, Joe and Quincy felt that the track had potential to be a crossover pop-rock hit for the soundtrack, similar to “Beat It” being a crossover hit for the “Thriller” album. As previously noted, The Pointer Sisters and Randy Crawford were later brought in by Joe Kehr to record background vocals, including a “telephone skit” between Michael and Crawford during the brief breakdown section.
Musicians who would later end up in The Rag-Tag Band, Michael’s backing band made up by himself and Joe, were brought in for instrumentation and overdubs. During the final mixing of the track and during post-production of Captain EO, Michael added dialogue from the short film and the film “Star Wars”, including sound effects from “Hooter” and “R2-D2”. The 12” extended version includes extra “telephone skit” segments, including from an uncredited appearance from Joe Kehr.
While Michael and Joe liked this version, Quincy felt that it wasn’t strong enough compared to other tracks from the upcoming album. The song was re-stylized ‘Nightline’ and given to multiple artists/groups; Ellen Foley’s “Another Breath” album, released in February 1983. The Pointer Sisters “Break Out” album, released in September 1983. And Randy Crawford’s 1983 album of the same name, released in October 1983. The version released by The Pointer Sisters for the initial release of their 1983 album “Break Out”, was later dropped from “Break Out” as originally formatted to allow inclusion of “I’m So Excited”. Their version was utilized as the B-side of the “Automatic” Single.
While Ellen Foley, The Pointer Sisters and Randy Crawford’s versions were released in 1983, Michael considered his version to be included on the “Captain EO” soundtrack album in September of 1986. After brief discussion with Joe and Quincy, it ended up on the [withdrawn] soundtrack. Shortly after, this version was shelved into the vault, outside of the Captain EO soundtrack.
