DHL was founded in San Francisco, United States in 1969 and expanded its service throughout the world by the late 1970s.

The company was primarily interested in offshore and intercontinental deliveries, but starting 1983 DHL also expanded within the USA. In 2002, Deutsche Post took over the US company DHL Worldwide Express and with it DHL Aviation. Following the takeover, the DHL Worldwide Express and Deutsche Post EuroExpress brands were merged into a single DHL Express brand. The original wine-red logo on a white background of the former DHL Worldwide Express was replaced by a light red logo on a yellow background with stronger italics and narrower stripes to match the corporate design of Deutsche Post.

The entire freight and express business of DHL Group is now operated under the DHL brand name. With the acquisition of the British logistics service provider Exel in 2005, the company was restructured into three divisions: DHL Express, DHL Global Forwarding/DHL Freight and DHL Supply Chain.

DHL Freight is one of the leading providers of road freight services in Europe and forms, together with DHL Global Forwarding, the forwarding business unit of DHL Group. Thanks to its extensive international network DHL Freight offers flexible, reliable and efficient transport solutions for road, intermodal and rail transport. At approx. 200 terminals in more than 40 countries some 13,300 DHL Freight employees process 60 million shipments per year and ensure a comprehensive overland transport services with seamless shipment tracking.

The business unit is headed by Uwe Brinks and covers Europe-wide individual and groupage transports (including express transfers), full and part loads as well as intermodal services, procurement and distribution logistics and worldwide trade fair and food logistics. In addition, DHL Freight offers its customers high value transportation, Cold Chain transportation, customs services and Lead Logistics Provider Services.
