At a news conference in Ottawa, Marco Mendicino, the federal minister of immigration, refugees, and citizenship, announces that eligible family members of the victims of the March 2019 crash of Ethiopian Airlines flight 302 and the January 2020 shooting down of Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 can apply for permanent residence in Canada. The new policy will be in effect until May 11, 2022. Applicants must be a relative of a victim who was a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or foreign national who was deemed eligible on their permanent residence application at the time of the disasters. The government is also expanding a policy that allows certain family members of Flight 752 victims to obtain temporary residence. (May 13, 2021)
