IN THE STUDIO explores percussion concepts, technique, and aesthetic in the informal setting of percussionist T.J. Troy’s home studio. Each video features in-depth discussion on various rhythmic concepts, and comes annotated with written examples embedded in the video, allowing you to practice along with me on the various ideas included.
Today’s video is inspired from a user comment, asking what sorts of fills they can apply to their own frame drumming. I begin by introducing a short fill idea that is easily manipulated, followed by a series of variations on that fill employing a cool riff that uses simple fingering.
Please check out the other videos in the series for more information. Especially consider checking IN THE STUDIO #4 to provide a better introduction to the Khaliji rhythm, as well as specific techniques I use across all frame drums.
