The BMW M5 has always been a favorite among automotive enthusiasts, and the latest version is no exception. After much anticipation, the newest M5 has been unveiled, and it is the most powerful version ever created. However, it is also the heaviest, due to its standard hybrid powertrain.
At the heart of the new M5 is a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 engine, combined with a single electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission. This setup produces a total of 717 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. While the engine itself generates 577 horsepower, the electric motor adds an additional 194 horsepower. The hybrid system features a smaller 14.8 kilowatt-hour battery.
BMW claims the new M5 can accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in just 3.4 seconds. Its top speed is limited to 155 miles per hour, but this can be increased to 190 miles per hour with the M Driver's Package. In Electric mode, the M5 offers up to 25 miles of quiet, battery-only driving range. However, engaging the throttle or manually shifting gears will activate the engine for more power.
The new M5 offers three standard drive modes: Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus. Comfort mode prioritizes a smooth and efficient ride, with the gasoline engine shutting off more frequently. Sport and Sport Plus modes keep the engine running continuously for more spirited driving. Optional Dynamic and Dynamic Plus settings provide the full M5 experience, optimizing the powertrain for maximum performance and enhancing the cooling system for track use.
The xDrive all-wheel-drive system can be switched to rear-wheel drive in Dynamic mode or by turning off stability control. An electronically controlled differential lock helps distribute power for better cornering, while active rear steering aids in handling.
The M5's braking system includes six-piston calipers on 16.1-inch front discs and single-piston calipers on 15.7-inch rear discs. Optional M Carbon ceramic brakes reduce weight and increase disc size to 16.5 inches. The car features 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels.
The 2025 BMW M5, with its advanced hybrid powertrain and sophisticated driveline, is set to deliver an exhilarating driving experience. Priced from $120,675, it will be available for delivery later this year.
